Working on the theory of the principles of plastic art, the artist and theorist of the Russian avant-garde of the early twentieth century Voldemars Matveys (published under the pseudonym Vladimir Markov; 1877-1914) explored the culture of the regions of Africa, Oceania, and North Asia. The book “The Art of Negroes”, dedicated to these issues, was published after Matveys’s death.
