Erich Gollerbach, Drawings by M. Dobuzhinsky. Moscow-Petrograd, 1923. Pre-revolutionary edition. Moscow – Petrograd, 1923. State Publishing House. Richly illustrated edition. This book by the prominent art historian Erich Gollerbach was dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the creative work of Mikhail Dobuzhinsky. In the preface, the author outlined the purpose of his work: “On the one hand, the essay seeks to clarify the psychological foundations of Dobuzhinsky’s creativity, and on the other hand, to explore his works.” Like many other books by Gollerbach on the visual arts, it is an easy and captivating read, akin to literary prose. Mstislav Valerianovich Dobuzhinsky (1875 – 1957) was a Russian and Lithuanian artist, a master of urban landscapes, a member of the creative association “World of Art,” an art critic, and a memoirist.
