The “Monuments of Ancient Moscow” contains an essay on the monumental history of the city and unique descriptions of the Kremlin, Kitai-Gorod, Belgorod, and Zemlyanoy Gorod of Moscow. Among them are the Assumption, Archangel, and Annunciation Cathedrals, the Chudov and Voskresensky Convents, the Armory, the Granovitaya and Golden Chambers, and the royal chambers, among others. In his work, the author accurately noted the connection between historical and architectural monuments with the culture of everyday life, the form of governance, and the level of education. The publication is illustrated with maps of Moscow, architectural drawings, and artworks by the renowned artist and academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, F. Solntsev. This fundamental work on the monuments of ancient Moscow was published in the 1840s under the patronage of the superintendent of the Moscow educational district, S.G. Stroganov, the governor D.V. Golitsyn, and Metropolitan Filaret of Moscow. The book was dedicated to Nicholas I, and as a reward, the author received a diamond ring from the emperor. Ivan Mikhailovich Snegirev (1793-1868), a professor at Moscow University in the Department of Roman Literature, was a renowned researcher of Moscow’s historical monuments. SKUANTT34/614
